Veil Aziza used in her end performance veil DVD

Finally I am getting Aziza's veil DVD and I am very excited to learn beautiful veil moves from her. Can't wait to get it in the mail! :-)

However, I have a question about the veil she used in her performance. I assume the one from youtube here is from that DVD

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOnqY4nbHQU

Is this chiffon veil? It does not look too light like silk, but doesn't look too heavy either. It looks perfect for this performance.

Can anyone let me know?

Thank you!

The Oregon Country Fair had a rainy day- for the first time in many, many years. The Bellydance stage was rained out- but I had the pleasure of watching the consummate professionals Aziza and Amel Tafsout brave the thuderstorm anyways and dance in the audience to a group of talented and likewise perseverent drummers.

Aziza, you are a raqstar, and I love you for it!

Things are crazy busy for me lately. I am sorry I have been so absent from this tribe. I have just returned from Brazil, and I am leaving for Spain on wednesday. Highlights have been the weeklong in Florida where I got to hang with some fabulous dancers and friends including our moderator Sha ni! I also had a whole week in Sante Fe, New Mexico! Eric was able to join me and it was like a vacation. My thanks to the kind and wonderful Myra.

I also had a sureal experience in Quebec City. The show featured SEVEN of my choreographies! I have never seen so many of my works performed together at one time. I am also looking forward to returning to Belgium (Hi Artemesia and Khalida!) and Strassborg (Fabienne, are you out there?!). Other really exciting events coming up are my Birthday Bash in August with the fantasic ORIT from Isreal. Seriously, she is my biggest dance crush right now. I am beside myself that she is able to come to Florida for my birthday. Also; Las Vegas, Baby (this Fall sponsered by Aradia) and another weeklong in Santa Cruz with one of my favorite promoters, Vashti.

Other big news; Eric and I are finally getting married! The big day is July 19th in Oregon. We are thrilled and excited. I will post pictures, I promise.

That's it for now, I will try to be in touch...

Sincerely,
Aziza

I just got an e-mail from IAMED about a new DVD, TURKISH STYLE BELLY DANCE
with ELIZABETH ARTEMIS MOURAT. I have seen alot of styles that are mixed, but guess I have never really seen "Turkish" style. Anyone have any insight or recomendations on ths subject? I like the Egyptian style, but must admit I am not "purist". I fuse alot together, but would like to know more about the different styles to see if there is a more clear direction for me to go in.
Thanks! *Belly Hugs* Chandnai

*waves hands*
I am!!!!! I am!!!!

Just wanting to get to know some of you before we get there....

Are you traveling with dance buddies or family?
What other activities are you excited about?
What are you packing?
Will you be bringing items for the costume swap - and if so, will they fit me?
How will we recognize you?

I'll start:
I'm traveling by myself but meeting up with dance buddies old and new!
I'm especially excited about going to Xtabi. I don't really like to snorkle, but it is soooo beautiful there.
I'm packing as light as I can. Last year I took WAY too much stuff. I lived in a bathing suit. (I suggest bringing a few bathing suits so you always have a dry one to throw on.) Most valuable item - beach bag!
I will try to find some things for the costume swap... but I'm more interested in seeing what you've got. I like odd little trinkets of all sorts and funky skirts. And I WILL be buying a crochet Jamaica flag bikini this year!

Can I hear a "Yeah, Beer!"
BTW - you WILL hate Red Stripe for 6 months after this trip. It's a given.

See y'all in 2 weeks!!!!
Yippeeeeee!

Aziza Week Long Teachers and Professionals Workshop !!!

So I found out from Andrea of Babylon Breeze [when I was trying to get 411 on new dvd's] That there is a week long Teachers and Professional workshop in Orlando ! It is March 30th to the 3rd of April.. I guess you get an invite from Andrea.

Gosh I wish I lived near there.. maybe come down with a cold =-D for a day or so and go take classes. I love her teaching.. breaks it down good and gives the "advanced" version too.

So who is going ? If you haven't signed up or been invited.. I think if you email andrea or call her - you might still get in.

dang... I want !!! Andrea - how about the WEST COAST =-P [ I know i will see her in July but I want the week long.]

this is a big thing for me because she isn't in Germany very often... But for the first of december I registered at her arms-hands+mysteryofslowmotion workshop at Leyla Jouvana's in Duisburg. It is only two hours...but I can't stay several days to do more workshops with her :-(

Hello, Aziza (waving...)!

I want to be prepared. What is her style when teaching/ when teaching a workshop? What does she care about?

Is Aziza coming to Gatineau Quebec?

The Denise Enan Troupe have a show on January 27 and Aziza is one of the special guest dancers (according to their publicity) http://www.baladi.ca/enantroupe/upcoming_e.htm . However I just saw on her website that she wlll be in Florida from Jan 26-28 http://www.azizashimmy.com/index2.html . I'm just wondering which is correct.
If she is indeed coming to Gatineau, I want to make sure that I have my ticket so see her live - she's such a fabulous dancer

thanks

I just got back from a crazy week in Duisburg :-)

Aziza, if you're reading this, I hope you had a safe trip home, and I'd like to THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU again for your dedication to this dance form and your generosity in and out of class.

I learned so much and I had such a good time.. and after sleeping and lazing about for 2 days now I am energized to go learn some more ;-)

I took the arms and hands workshop for the 3rd time this year...
But still, ouch, this one really kicked my uh.. fingers :-P

All Aziza's workshops were great (especially the traveling steps, got some stuff to work on there :-) and I also loved Hinds salsa fusion and Sharon Kihara's conditioning and technique

And ..Their performances at the gala show ROCKED as well :-)
I'm very grateful I got to be there..

So.. who else was there?
And what did ya think?

Aziza at HOT Dance Camp October 2007

Hello Aziza Fans!

Can't get enough Aziza? Want to spend three glorious days soaking in Aziza and the beautiful Texas sunshine? Now is the time to start making plans to come to Bahaia's HOT Dance Camp this October 11-14!

Imagine three days (and nights) spent in the beautiful central Texas Hill Country hanging out with Aziza and your sister campers, class with Aziza each day, two informal shows, bonus classes with Bahaia and Tamra Henna (that's me!), bonfires, camp crafts, shopping, and general silliness.

I can tell you from past experience, camp is special - it's a great way to connect with other dancers, with yourself, and to really absorb the magic of a great instructor.

Bahaia's Tribal Camp, which is this weekend (April 12-15) is SOLD OUT, with a waiting list of 20 campers, so we anticipate spots for Aziza going fast.

For more information, including a schedule and online registration, visit:
of ‘golden age’ stars and others will be included.
2 hours: DANCE DYNAMICS - THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GOOD AND GREAT: What makes the difference between the
average show and one that makes you think, “Wow, she was amazing?” Between the dancer whose show doesn’t quite stay
with you and the one you can’t forget? And why isn’t that dancer who seemed so fiery and fast, or did all that layering,
memorable? Probably because of dynamics. Dynamics can help you fill in what you might be missing and know what NOT to
do. When you know what these are and how to work with them, everything you do will be interesting, and nothing will be flat!

Aziza, I had a wonderful time last weekend! Your workshop was one of the best I've attended. You have been one of my dance idols for a long time and I was thrilled so see you were coming to the South. I was a little nervous at first being the only tribal dancer in an ocean of cabaret but the things you taught can be incorporated into any style. You are every bit as gracious as I've heard and watching a live performance incredible. Your teaching style is clear and easy to follow. I can't wait to take another workshop with you. Thanks again!

I have to add my kudos to Marianne's...I had a great time at the Toronto workshop and now I'm afraid you'll have to put up with me everytime you come to town!
It was my first "intensive" workshop, and I just loved it. I really appreciate the effort you put into it, "customizing" the workshop in the areas your students were looking for instruction on, and having so much new stuff to teach us. After the last workshop I took with you, I recieved compliments on my dancing which was new for me being fairly new to the dance - your teaching made a noticeable difference in my dancing, and that just shows what a great teacher you are. We'll see what they say after this one **grin**

Thanks as well to Hannan - it was a great environment (if a trifle warm that first day, lol) and she's got a great group of gals there!

Thanks again,
Pat

One of my students has a little girl who is in LOVE with Aziza. In their house it isn't the Wiggles, Dora the Explorer or Sesame Street that she asks to watch all the time, it is the Aziza DVD I loaned her...LOL!
I thought you all would enjoy seeing this little clip of her dancing while watching the DVD

My second experience seeing Aziza perform and taking workshop with her.

Brilliant. A consummate professional with a fantastic sense of humour who makes everything look so effortless.

I think one of the favourite things I will take away from the weekend is Aziza talking about letting the wonder and awe of what you are doing show through in your dancing. She also spoke about the fact that we dance what we practice (I am sure I remember her saying the same thing two years ago). Only five and a half years in for me re dancing but I know exactly what she means and I hope that I am improving in technique, presentation and style and I do strive to practice and drill the way I would perform for an audience.

But I have to admit a huge struggle for me are cross step turns. I just can't seem to find the right technique to maintain my equilibrium. Not having any other kind of dance training I have been working and experimenting with this for a long time. Aziza makes if look so easy!

Hi, I had my birthday and I said I wanted a DVD by Aziza. Now I want to chose. Does she teach choreo on any? I wanted to go for her "practical companion" I looked up at peko-records. There's one preview that shows her explaining a ribcage-circle so I wonder is this DVD on basic technique, or is there advanced technique? - combinations and choreo, too?
For the moment I decided that choreos for me are the best to remember combinations. I'd love a little taqsim-choreo...

It was magical!!

Wow....what a weekend!! Magic is the only way to describe it. The weather even cooperated except for one afternoon when it rained. But we had a beautiful sunset every night and bright sunny days to enjoy the beach when we weren't dancing.

Dancers from all over the world met & got to know one another while sharpening their skills as belly dancers with instructors Aziza, Bahaia, & Cheryl Bushey.

People here on the island will talk about the Saturday night Gala Show for a long time...it was truly magical. Every dancer looked beautiful & graceful under the Carribean sky. Troupe Wi 'am, my dance group, had a wonderful performance and I was very proud of them especially since this was the first perfomance for most of them. Neenah amazed the audience with her dazzling sword & coins, Cheryl added her beautiful Egyptian style, while Bahaia entertained us all with her beautiful, bouncy baladi. Aziza...well she's always fabulous but the audience was really wowed by her veil poi and her mesmerizing isolations. I've actually had people call me to ask “how does she do that thing with her chest?”

There have been some pictures posted on our tribe at www.tribes.tribe.net/jamaicaraks please feel free to have a look & maybe even join our tribe so you will know what's happening in Jamaica. I'm sure there will be more pictures posted as people get home and get more organized. I know I will post some as soon as I find my camera.

I especially want to thank all of the ladies who joined this year. Y'all were a truly special group and I enjoyed getting acquainted with all of you. Hope to see you all back again next year and bring a friend....

Life is good!!!

From Aziza

Hello Everyone!
Happily back home in my Baby's arms! This last tour was a blast. I met some great people and also got to see many familiar faces. It is a little crazy to think that I am now teaching more in Europe than in North America. I will be in Europe three times this year and add Argentina and Asia and you have Aziza all over...

It was my first time in Czech Republic, Prague was incredible and the fabulous women of Troupe Aphrodite were perfect hosts. I even had an Aziza billboard in Zlin! Another first was Portugal. Beautiful country and Ana presented the dance in a very nice theater and the workshops were held in a gorgeous health club. In Belgium I bought more Bella costumes and ran into Ava Flemming there! I ended my tour in Morocco and kept shopping....

I have to admit that learning to count in all of the different languages has been a challange. I am looking forward to teaching in English this weekend in Santa Cruz!

Another highlight is the new website! I am so happy with how it turned out. I have heard the comments and there will be some changes by this weekend. We will be adding dates to the retro photos and adding new pictures from this last tour. Also adding some video!

But for right now I am relishing my own pillow, not having to keep my toothbrush in a plastic tube, and making out with Eric.

Spring!
Aziza

Well, we are catching our breath here in Santa Cruz...we had a lovely weekend with AZIZA. Incredible energy in the workshops and an amazingly elegant show. At least one review of the show is in the works...but my favorite review is from my two year old. I think he has his first crush because he is walking around the house saying:

"I only like ZEE-ZA!"

Sooooooooo cute!

Aziza workshop in Chicago

It took me a week to post this but I survived two days of workshops. Aziza was fantastic. I loved her visualizations, like the fact that we should own the stage and mark our territory like an animal does so we should figuratively pee on the stage. She had some great techniques in the drill workshops that really made you focus on range of motion. I also think I need to go out and have a shirt made that says "I survuved the 20 minute shimmy." The second day my favorite was the traveling section of the workshop. I'm still a beginner and really don't do much traveling yet so it was a real challenge for me. About an hour into the workshop the balls of my feet started hollering at me pretty loudly because I never spend that much time on them. It was a great weekend. Sonya's bringing her back in 2008 and I can't wait.

Hello All,
I only have a minute but I thought I would drop in and say Hey...I am in the Czech Republic at a
shisha lounge. I had a great workshop and show in Prague last weekend. Prague is fabulous and the promoters were very kind and enthusiastic. Coming up I have Brussels, Portugal, and Morocco. I really have to pinch myself sometimes, I am truly blessed!

The only downside is that it will be another 5 weeks away from Eric. :( I am lucky that I have such a supportive man. We are going to be going to Jamaica together in May. It is really rare that he comes along, but Jamaicaraks is going to be such a great opportunity to get some sun and beach! Anyone want to have a Red Stripe with Eric and I beachside?

Well that's all the time I have. I will touch base again soon!

Ciao!
Aziza

aziza in brussels

hey, just to make you all envious: aziza is in brussels at the moment, teaching and performing. we already had two great workshops. i want going to post till she left, but i want to share already.

- advanced fluidity, with a lot of new drilling material. great reminder we all have to work harder
- a really cool drum solo, not too long so we sort of managed. but was i tired after! i usually dont like drum solo's much, and i almost never dance other people's choreo's but this one will be tempting..

BUT BUT BUT BUT

i love her as a teacher, but the best part is always seeing her perform. yes, she can do that in my livingroom a lot (i want a new performance dvd!!!) but, live, is a different thing. she did a beautifull slow piece in a stunning dress, it was soo euh, let's find a word, mmm: a marvel....

for the second set she was wearing a costume i hadnt seen yet (forgot to ask, is it new?), with an animal print and thousands of rinestones, she sparkled and sparked. there was veil work (oh, and a few new surprising combinations there, how does she keep coming up with it) and the "cat song", very very very funny.

i never know how to describe it really. she was just wonderfull. sometimes i forget to clap and cheer cause it's just mesmerizing.

, off to get ready now, to go and take her veil workshop,,

aziza, we love you, thank you for traveling all this way again and again. my students say hello and cant stop talking about you either. i'll hear nothing but aziza this aziza that for the next months.

Aziza in Norfolk, VA in April?

Greetings! I haven't been able to access Azizashimmy.com the past few days, but I do remember the calendar indicating that she would be in Norfolk, VA (for Janeeda and Babylon Breeze) the weekend of April 21. However, I haven't found any info about this anywhere else. I usually get info for Janeeda's events in the mail, but nothing so far.

Anyone else having trouble with Aziza's site?

Know anything about the Norfolk workshop?

Thanks.

I have just gotten Aziza's Bellydance Companion DVD, and love it. Problem is, I'm a little confused about the shimmy section and was wondering if any of y'all could help me. I can't seem to maintain my shimmy at all, while all the ladies on the DVD just keep shakin' along. And is it a true straight leg shimmy she's doing on there? Is it bad to hyperextend your knees, or is she bent a bit and I can't tell? My shimmies are very sad and anemic at this point, and any advice would be so appreciated...:-)

Hey Ladies,
Want to get a chance for some individual attention from Aziza in a limited enrollment workshop? What if it was held in a relaxed, tropical (yet affordable) setting? Add that you could bring your husband or your best friend and they wouldn't be bored to death while you attend class.... sounds pretty sweet!

OK, then. Come to Jamaica Raks. May 3-6, 2007. Negril, Jamaica.
There's room for only 25 dancers. Please register soon!
http://www.jamaicaraks.com

What's stopping you? Airfare is not much more than you might pay to fly to another state. Yes, you need a passport, but that's a good thing to have should you be called up to dance in Cairo, anyway.

ps - you also can take class with me, tribal class with cheryl, yoga on the beach, costume workshop, YOU can dance in the show with the Carribean Sea as your backdrop, plenty of Red Stripe, get some sand in your dance bag, reggae music, jerk chicken, Ting, snokling, golfing, lobster pizza, explore pirate caves (sorry, i don't think Johnny Depp will be there... but who knows), toooooo much fun and great dancing!

My time in Germany was fantastic again this year. It was really great to see so many familiar faces after being on the road this long. I was honored to share the stage with such amazing dancers. Wonderful to have Ava Fleming here, too. I think she took Duisberg by storm!

So I will be heading to Belguim to see Artemesia and visit Bella. Then on to France to see Fabienne and give one final workshop and show before heading home to Eric.

This has been a fabulous trip...

Flight Info for 2nd Annual JamaicaRaks BellyDancing in Paradise with Aziza, Bahaia, & Cheryl Bushey

Hello from Jamaica,

It's time to start looking for the best flight deals to come to the 2nd Annual JamaicaRaks BellyDancing in Paradise Workshop & Retreat on May 3-6, 2007.

I spend time on the internet every day looking for the cheapest flights from here to the US. I thought I would share some of the websites I use.

www.sidestep.com Shows all available flights for most airlines for the dates you select.

www.worryfreevacations.com A charter that only flys on selected dates so you might have to fly on a Tuesday or Wednesday for instance, but it's usually by far the cheapest way to go. You get better results if you call the 800 number on the website and tell them the dates you want to fly. Otherwise you can spend a lot of time trying to figure the days of the week they are flying from your area.

www.airgorilla.com I find this website usually has better rates than Expedia and Travelocity. Usually I look here, find the cheapest flight, then go to whichever airline website and sometimes it's cheaper still.

This is how I usually start my seach for a tickets. Hope it helps some of y'all find a good fare. We want everyone to be able to join us here in Jamaica.

Spent last weekend on the beach. The water was a beautiful warm turquoise, the sand sparkling in the sun, the drinks were icy cold, and the Reggae music set the mood. All we were missing was Aziza, Bahaia, Cheryl Bushey & YOU!! Come to Jamaica, Mon....den evry ting's irie!!

Life is good!!

Hello my Tribe...
Guten tag from Switzerland! I am in the middle of my first European tour. This will be my third visit to Germany, but the longest I've been away teaching and performing. This tour I will visit Austria, Switzerland, Germany and France, and be away from Eric for almost 6 weeks. So far it has been great, lonely, inspiring, irratating, fulfilling, and meaningful. I am a lucky, lucky, woman.

I want to mention that I have some limited t-shirts for this years tour. They were an experiement...but I thought maybe you'all might be interested. I only have a few left! You can order them from azizashop.com. Also...I am renovating my website! The new site should be up in the next three weeks. I would appreciate any feedback....

When I get home I will try to share some photos from Chicago, Kitchner, and Europe.

Sincerely,
Aziza

Aziza Rocks Kitchener

Today was the second time I've attended an Aziza workshop, and I plan on going to more.

The workshop was held at the Transylvania Club in Kitchener, ON, and was hosted by Dharlene Valeda of Haft Vadi. I didn't get a headcount, but I'm guessing around 50 women were taking part in today's sessions. The class began with a walking warm-up. Not walking like walking-to-the-bus, of course, but walking like we OWNED the stage. Or, as Aziza likened it: marking it as our territory.

"Pee all over that stage!" Aziza said. And later on, "I still can't smell you!"

Aziza is pretty goofy, and that just makes me like her all the more.

Because there were so many people in the class, it was difficult to see Aziza. So she numbered us all from 1-5, and had each #1 in a line, #2 lined up behind, and so forth. Each time we changed an exercise, the front line would move to the back, and everyone else would shuffle up a spot. In this way, we all got a pretty decent view for much of the class. It also helped that from time to time, Aziza travelled back through the glittery, shimmying masses, correcting technique as it was needed.

The first part of the day was my favourite. We worked on various dance drills, including psoas exercises (pelvic tilts through the psoas and not through the glutes or abs), ab exercises (oh, the bellybutton ferris wheel of doom!), undulations with rondes du jambe, and arm/hand movements. We also did maya and umi variations with weighted changes and on one leg at a time. I plan on incorporating several of these drills in my own daily practice.

In the afternoon, we worked on a short drum solo choreography. Although there are parts of the choreography I didn't get (the tricky bit at the end of the choreography happened while I was in the back with no view), there are plenty of combinations I plan on making my own. For instance, I really like the "level three" shoulder-hip combination. Level one is just shoulders moving up and down in opposition to one another. Level two has the shoulders and hips moving simultaneously up and down, alternating from side to side. And level three is working the up and downs on the diagonal. Tricky, tricky, tricky....

The workshop ended with a languorous stretching session, which felt awfully nice after all that hard work.

She'll be teaching again tomorrow, but unfortunately, I can't attend the sessions as I'm attending a butoh workshop in Toronto. Talk about a serious change in gears, hmm?

Tonight was also the Bewitching Bellydance Ball, held every year on the Saturday closest to Hallowe'en. It's an <s>excuse</s> imperative to get dancers up there doing their craziest theme performances. There were zombies, elves, cats, ghosts, monsters, and murder victims up there shaking their stuff. And Aziza's alter-ego Dizeza was up there in bright green bedlah doing a dance with choreographed nose-wiping and Kleenex-tossing. Definitely not the sort of stuff you'd expect to see on one of those myriad "World's Hottest Belly Dancers of the Universe" DVDs. She also did a veil poi dance, which made enormous lightbulbs fly up over both Khizmet's and my head. Yeah, I'll be making my own veil poi, and it will be very, very soon. The possibilities are tempting me with SUCH tenacity.

I didn't dance tonight at the show (although I did cameo as Mourner #3 during Valizan's moving piece dedicated to his father), but I hope to next year. I'm thinking I might do a Trailer Park Boys dance. I want to be Julian, with the ubiquitous highball glass full of booze and ice never getting spilled. Now, we just need to figure out how to incorporate Bubbles and a grocery cart into the routine.....
